Cognitive Predictors of Coherence in Adult ESL Learners’ Writing

Background. Coherence is considered one of the most important qualities written discourse. Despite its fundamental importance, it still a fuzzy and abstract concept in English Second Language (ESL) contexts. Consequently, many ESL learners struggle to produce coherent text. Morphological, phonological, orthographic awareness, vocabulary knowledge, grammatical competence have been identified as predictors writing quality novice writers. There is, however, lack data assess whether such linguistic skills also predict coherence adult learners’ writing.
 Purpose. The purpose study was find out relationships among set measures which included morphological, knowledge writing. 
 Methods. To testify potential writing, university students (126) were assessed by mentioned above addition four coherence: two relatively reader-based (ILETS Holistic Scale) text-based (Topical Structure Analysis Topic Based Analysis). All proved valid reliable.
 Results. findings revealed that morphological related measures, particularly measures. In contrast, phonological awareness generally did not correlate with measures.
 Implication. Reasons for associations variables discussed areas future research offered.
